Five HFs hit 2000gns at Portadown
BIDDING topped the 2000gns-mark on five occasions at the New Milk Year sale of Holstein Friesians at Portadown last week, testimony to the high standard of cattle on offer.
But a convincing winner of the overall championship was Ronald McLean and Sons Relough Lamona 97th from their herd at Dungannon, Co Tyrone.
Bred from the heart of one of the best cow families in the herd, she is by the Lindy son Hyland Monotechnic and out of a Warden dam. Her grand-dam is the Gold Star brood cow Relough Lamona 3 (Ex94) Elite.
She was awarded her top placing by judge Alex Walker, Ranaldstown, and was shown freshly calved giving 6.5gal a day.
The McLeans brought a wagonload of quality cattle and carried off the reserve championship with Relough Jane 10th, a daughter of the successful sire Lachstone Dynamite – a Blackstar son. She made 2100gns.
Bidding closed at 2080gns for the striking heifer Laurelhill Luke Darkie from Brian Mawhinney, Co Antrim. Sired by the top ranking bull Norrielake Cleitus Luke and out of a Southwind Bell dam, this eye-catcher was giving 7gal a day and traces back to the herds legendary Darkie family.
More accolades for the Relough consignment came with the Top Cow award with the stylish second calver from the Danna line. Combining type and breeding she realised 2000gns. (Automart)
