THE National Farmers Union has cancelled two meetings due to take place in East Anglia because of the outbreak of foot-and-mouth in Essex.
A regional livestock meeting planned for the Wednesday (21 February) and a milk meeting due to take place on Thursday (22 February) were both postponed.
Livestock producers from Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex had been due meet at the at the Green Man, Old Harlow, on Wednesday evening.
A similar meeting of milk producers from Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire had been scheduled for Agriculture House, Newmarket.
But NFU regional livestock adviser Barney Kay said members should stay at home and do everything possible in a bid to stop the disease spreading.
“Only early and immediate precautionary measures will minimise the risk of the disease spreading,” he said.
Farmers with doubts about livestock on their farms have been urged to contact their vet or the Ministry of Agriculture at Chelmsford on (01245) 356910.
