France leads GM ban rebels
By FWi staff
FRANCE is to lead member states wanting to keep a three-year EU ban on licences for genetically modified crops, reports The Times.
The European Parliament is set to approve tough regulations for licensing GMOs, and will seek to lift the moratorium.
But France is leading five countries which insist the ban must remain because the directive does not go far enough.
The Times says this will infuriate the rest of the EU, the USA and biotechnology companies.
Eighteen licences were granted before the moratorium. A further 14 are in abeyance.
