G8 in talks on GM
JAPAN hopes to find a “common direction” on genetically modified when it hosts the G8 summit in July, reports the Financial Times.
Leaders of the worlds top industrial nations will gather at the southern Japanese island of Okinawa on 21 July.
The Japanese ministry of agriculture has called for the World Trade Organisation to set up a forum to look consider how GM food relations to existing WTO agreements.
Currently the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development is considering the GM issue for the G8 members.
But its mandate ends after Okinawa, and it is uncertain if it will continue to work on the issue.
