Generation game goes green

FUNDS to stimulate green electricity generation is the eventual aim of a new scheme developed by Beds-based merchant Sidney C Banks and South Western Power.

Green Electron, the first green tariff in the UK, has just been launched as a pilot scheme to test interest among SWEB customers.

"Electricity from renewable fuel resources is more expensive so less than 2% of the electricity in the UK is produced from green energy," says Gerry Swarbrick, SWP managing director.

"In addition to doing something positive for the environment, Green Electron customers will be helping to create an additional demand for electricity produced from environmentally-friendly sources."

Customers will pay a premium of about £3.50 a month. That will cover SWEBs costs, and the rest will be ploughed back to green generation projects not receiving Non-Fossil Fuel Order funding.

The company will match demand for green electricity with an equivalent amount from renewable generators. That will be verified by an independent organisation.

Unlike NFFO projects, developers using the cash generated will be free to invest it as they see fit, using the most appropriate technologies and fuel sources, says Banks energy production manager Nigel Viney. "It should provide a rich resource for future projects."

&#8226 SWEB customers who have not received Green Electron information can call (0345-419484).

Coppice for fuel could receive a boost if green electricity can be sold for a premium to fund new projects, says Nigel Viney (inset).
