German closure
THE EU Commission has demanded that the German government must close down one of its meat plants because of its believed involvement in the illegal export of British beef.
The action follows recent commission inspections in Germany where evidence was found involving "tens of tonnes" of illegal exports, officials said.
The commission has also asked the German authorities to strengthen controls in several other meat plants. The German government has been given a week to respond.
