Glimmer of hope emerges at DairyScot
THE HERALD believes it has seen the first glimmer of hope for the farming sector at the DairyScot show at Ingliston.
DairyScot chairman Alex Scott told the newspaper he was encouraged by news that input prices and interest rates were coming down.
Mr Scott is now looking for a better way to price milk so that the “cake” can be more evenly distributed between producer, processor and supermarket.
Lord Sewel, the Scottish agriculture minister, toldThe Heralds reporter that he detected farmers were looking forward to the new challenges ahead.
The paper reported that observers were impressed with the quality of cattle at the show.
The champion was a Canadian import and third calver in her last lactation, which gave 12,000kg at 3.85% butter fat and 3.2% protein.
The reserve was an Ayrshire second calver which gave more than 7000kg, at 5% butter fat and 3.65% protein, as a heifer.
