‘Good progress over bank holiday’
ABOUT 75% of winter wheat and spring barley have been combined across the southwest region according to Robin Webb, of Dalgetys in Dorset.
“Wheat yields have been very heavy on light chalk land in north Dorset. But it is the absolute opposite on heavy land to the west of Dorchester. There really is a big variance.” On chalk, yields have been above 10t/ha (4t/acre) but on heavier land yields have ranged from 6.2-7.4t/ha (2.5-3t/acre).
Quality of wheat has been reasonable. Protein is about 12.5-12.6%, specific weight 77-78Kg/hl and he says there is no evidence that Hagbergs have decreased.
Spring barley yields are between 6.2-6.8t/ha (2.5-2.75t/acre), but quality has been mixed. “Nitrogen between 1.6-1.7% is common. However, there is some splitting in grains, screenings are variable and there is some fusariun in the sample.”
