MAIZE growers should be pro-active towards protecting the environment, and focusing on it should improve crops and profits.

So said Devon maize grower Charles Moore launching the MGAs Managing maize – environmental protection with profit booklet at the MGA conference.

Funded by the Environment Agency and Ministry of Agriculture, it will be sent to all known maize growers.

"The booklet highlights the major environmental concerns with the crop and gives management guidelines," said Mr Moore.

Roger Unwin of MAFFs environmental protection division added that the booklet advised on reducing manure run-off and avoiding soil erosion.
