Harvest late in the Malverns

HARVEST is late for Austin Knowles, who farms at Cradley near Great Malvern. He finished winter barley on Tuesday (14 August), but now thinks he will have to wait another 10 days till wheat is fit.

On grade two loam soil, Heligan barley yielded about 7.4t/ha (3t/acre), which is in line with the farm average.

“It was late. We should have finished 10 days ago. The rain has brackled the plant, snapping the stem half way down.

“Considering, this it has not done too badly. But the weather has not been on our side.”
