Healthy trade at R&W sale

CUMBRIA Ayrshire breeders J Whiteford and Sons are well known for cattle from their prize-winning Middle herd, but it was a bought-in cow carrying the Rottington prefix that scooped the reserve championship for them at the sale of red and white cattle at Carlisle.

But Rottington Marigold 74th, bred by R A Crichton, is sired by Middle Jubilation, this years National Production Ayrshire Sire of the Year.

She had given 8923kg in 388 days with her first calf and was placed in reserve top spot by judge Mr Andrew Dunlop, Castle Douglas, and made the days top price of 1250gns to G G Baynes and Sons, Hexham.

Averages: four cows in-milk/ in-calf £742; 36 heifers in-milk/ in-calf £584. (Harrison and Hetherington) &#42
