Herd slaughter review
FRANCES policy of killing whole cattle herds when a BSE case is discovered is likely to come under review as the number of cases increases, according to French vets.
Speaking at the SIA agricultural show in Paris, vet and head of Frances Office of Animal Health, Ghislain Follet said that he expected numbers of BSE cases to rise in the country. "Now it is compulsory to test animals over 30 months for BSE, we expect numbers of cases to increase as detection rates will be higher.
"When numbers of cases are small, whole herd eradication is possible but with numbers increasing, compensation costs of £1344-£1728 a cow are unsustainable." *
