HGCA: Mid-East interest in EU wheat
Tuesday, 13 February, 2001
RENEWED buying interest from the Middle East lifted sentiment in an otherwise quiet market.
Tenders from both Jordan and Tunisia were seen over the week, with the latter said to be favouring French and possibly UK origin.
The recent level of export awards are reportedly helping with the latest maximum refund of 13/t, unchanged from the previous week for 341,000 tonnes of wheat.
MATIF November 2001 wheat futures were steady to slightly higher on ongoing weather concerns. November wheat ended Friday at 122.75/t, up 0.75 on a week ago.
Planted area is pegged 6% lower due to wet weather, at 4.624m hectares. A fuller picture will be known in March.
ACCORDING to the Portuguese Government Statistics Agency, farmers have planted 20% less wheat compared to last season.
Heavy rains have hit planting progress of the 2001 crop of both wheat and barley.
