High price paid for beef cattle

CHAROLAIS beef cattle dominated a multi-breed female sale at Portadown, Northern Ireland, where prices reached 3000gns.

The sale also saw good entries of Limousin, Charolais, Simmental and Blonde dAquitaine females, but it was Charolais cattle from the dispersal of the Clonboye and Burrenvale herds that inspired bidding.

Northern Ireland beef breeders packed the ring at Portadown and moved into top gear for the Clonboye offering from Leslie Blakely, paying most for the Maerdy Impeccable daughter Clonboye Natalie.

This 1997-bred cow is out of a Balmyle Champion dam and was in-calf to Thruntons Nostradamus. But her appeal to buyers was enhanced by a strong May-born bull calf at foot by well known sire Oldstone Egbert.

Making the top call of 3000gns was David Montgomery who adds the outfit to his Bridgehall herd at Omagh, Co Tyrone.

Another from the same herd, Clonboye Harriet, realised 1700gns. This Mountjoy Dallas sired 10-year-old traces back to Simpsons Gregg. She was suckling a spring-born heifer calf by Egbert.

A major reduction of Frank Reids Burrenvale herd provided buyers with more opportunities to secure quality Charolais females. Leading this selection was the 1998-bred Mountjoy Olga – an Arney Executive daughter – with Brampton breeding on both sides.

She stood second at Balmoral last year but at 3500gns, bids didnt make reserve for her and her week-old heifer calf.

The Lisnisk Limousin herd of Brian Wilson, Banbridge, produced the breeds top price of 820gns given for a maiden heifer by Gransha Noddy.

Another maiden heifer led Simmentals when Thelma Gorman sold a Brinkton Brilliant daughter from her Woodford herd at 670gns.

Best for the Blonde dAquitaines was 770gns paid for Ashtonlodge Lotis – the French-bred stock bull entered by Paul McConnell, Lisburn. (Automart) &#42
