Highlands attract strong interest
A REDUCTION sale of Highland cattle from Lady Martins Brand fold drew a good crowd to Melton Mowbray market.
Although auctioneer Martin Shouler said many buyers were "part-time farmers", the demand for stock confirmed the continued interest in the breed.
The fold, which was established in 1975, has thrived on the bracken and gorse grazing at Lady Martins home in Charnwood Forest, Leics.
Its an environment that has provided ideal conditions for the breed and, along with skilful breeding, has enabled Lady Martin to achieve many show-ring successes.
Top was 500gns for the senior stock Beann-Dubh of Cookham.
This black 12-year-old sire is by Morthriath Dubh of Cookham and had taken a second at the Royal Show in his earlier show career.
He was bought by Mr and Mrs J Price, Botcheston, Leics.
Averages: four in-calf cows to 380gns (av 345gns); six cows with calves at foot to 445gns (av 395gns); four three-year in-calf heifers to 470gns (av 395gns); six two-year heifers to 450gns (av 360gns); eight yearling heifers to 240gns (av 200gns). (Shouler and Son with Andrew Grainger and Co) *
