Hitting the High Peak Trail

I BATTLED through the stormy weather to meet intrepid members and a few husbands at Wirksworth in Derbys for the FWC walking weekend.

The plan was to have a leisurely lunch at the Black Rock picnic site but everyone was raring to go for their first taste of the High Peak Trail. Luckily the walk I had planned was reasonably sheltered and shorter than I had remembered so we didnt get too wet. However the members from Glos – later to be known as "the Gloucester 10" – decided to make the most of the afternoon and continued walking for another hour or so.

On Saturday night we welcomed some Derbys members to dinner at Shottle Hall. Come Sunday morning we decided we would all walk around Carsington Water, about eight miles, the last mile spent by me telling my companions that the pub was just around the next corner.

We rested at the Miners Arms then took on the challenge of mountain biking. I am sure some of our party hadnt been on a bike for years and some certainly were not used to the luxury of gears.

A pub supper on Sunday night and a great evening of camaraderie ended a brilliant weekend.
