Holstein herd gets 311 deals

THE final two days of the massive three-day sale to disperse the Down Ampney Holstein herd put 316 cows and milking heifers and 225 in-calf heifers through the ring on the estates farm at Cricklade, Glos.

The 311 deals struck for the milking stock achieved an average of £618 with prices reaching 1450gns paid by R L Edwards and Partners, Whitchurch, Shropshire, for a 1998-bred cow by Etazon Celsius. She had given over 10,000kg in her first two lactations and was due in October to Kregnol Mandel-S-Man.

The same buyers also paid 1200gns for a milky heifer by Genus Brooklyn that had given 11,600kg in 275 days and was in-calf to Vero BMW Special.

Following the pattern of recent sales there was a good demand for youngstock with 219 in-calf heifers levelling at £754. Messrs Fergusson of Longtown, Cumbria, gave 920gns for a daughter of Beachlawn Gelpro Tobet out of a 10,000kg Lasso cow.

Fellow Cumbria buyers J P Fisher paid 900gns for a heifer by Fielders Lira Lord out of a six-lactation cow by Rocket with three five-figure notes up to 12,600kg.

Also at 900gns was a Gibbon-sired heifer taken by R Barrett, Oxon (Wright Manley). &#42
