IN BRIEF

OUTDOOR pig feed wastage could be cut by providing a straw mat for feeding.

Cotswold Pig Development Companys Mike Wilkinson says that too much feed is trodden into the mud every winter. "Sows may need 3.5kg of concentrate a day if they are to remain in good condition and 20%of feed – 5kg a sow a week – can be lost and productivity will suffer,"he says.

He suggests spreading three round bales initially and topping up the straw, depending on weather.g
