• MARKS & Spencer has become the first major retailer to ban sales of eggs produced in battery cages from its shops. Animal welfare group Compassion in World Farming praised the move, but criticised M&S for charging too much for its free range eggs. The retail price of about 89p a half dozen for is almost double the NFUs estimated cost of production, CIWF said.
