IN BRIEF
• PIG producers are urged to store semen correctly on-farm to maintain its quality and viability.
Breeding company PIC suggests storing semen at 15-20C (59-68F), or ideally at 17C (62.6F), to avoid damage that occurs when it gets too cold. A max/min thermometer kept in the semen storage box will help ensure temperature does not stray from the recommended range. Avoid ultra-violet light which kills sperm, reminds PIC which suggests its Gene Flat Packs are stored flat and turned two or three times a day.
