• NEW Zealand is witnessing mounting public concern over the housing of sows in stall and tethers, according to Wilts based research centre CAMBAC.
Director Jane Guise says there is growing interest in New Zealand in management of sows in loose housed systems as consumer interest in food production systems increases. CAMBAC has been contacted by NZ based organisations wanting to review UK research on such systems, says Dr Guise.

Launched at Smithfield, the book covers all native pure and cross breeds as well as breeds commonly found in the UK. Costing £10, the book is available from the NSA, The Sheep Centre, Malvern, Worcs WR13 6PH.
• A HERD competition with £1000 prize money for Charolais breeders is being sponsored by Marks and Spencer and will be based on EBVs. There are classes for herds over and under 20 cows and also a special prize for the herd with the tightest calving interval. *
