IN BRIEF

uPOLAND is demanding the same direct income aids for its farmers as paid elsewhere in the EU, as part of its accession negotiations with Brussels. Warsaw has promised to bring its 2m farmers up to EU standards by 2003 and says it does not want a transition period. But Brussels has made it clear it does not have the funds to pay the same aid to the accession countries.

uFRENCH farm minister, Jean Glavany, has announced an emergency aid package worth FFr135m (£13.5m) to help pig and poultry producers through their financial crises. The cash supplements a recent FFr50m (£5m) restructuring package for the poultry sector and follows major disruption by Breton producers in Paris last week. &#42
