India restarts sugar imports
INDIA resumed importing sugar after a gap of nearly two years. Imports should
keep prices stable during the six-week national festival period which begins in the
second week of October.
The trade has contracted to import nearly 80,000 tonnes so far. It is likely
to import more than 1m tonnes.
Indias own production in the season ending September 30 is expected to drop
to 12.8m tonnes from a record 16.45m tonnes a year ago.
