Ingenious way of spreading OSR

UNRELIABLE results with the Autocast system of establishing oilseed rape have prompted James Moldon to fit it to a press which is hitched to the farms old set of Simba 2B discs.

"Now seed is spread ahead of the press, behind the discs," explains Mr Moldon of the Felix Thornley Cobbold Trusts Stanaway Farm, near Otley. Rolling twice if necessary completes the operation.

"If wed ploughed this year we would not have got any rape in at all because we wouldnt have been able to get a seed-bed."

Ironically, the one field of oilseed rape established with the Autocast behind the combine as a comparison has also taken superbly this year.

"It was dry when we cut and we mixed in slug pellets. Then we had light rain for a week and it got away well. Now it is a cracking crop." &#42
