Japan to import Golden Delicious

Japan is poised to grudgingly open its doors to French Golden Delicious apples after 18 years.

The French have convinced the Japanese authorities they will not risk exposing their country to infestation by alien insects and bacteria. Imports begin next month.

Discussions are continuing about possible exports of other apples. The fruit is regarded as a luxury in Japan. They are often sent as gifts in individual wrapping.
