Light lamb scheme deadline looms
By FWi staff
LIVESTOCK producers have until Friday (26 October) to make an application to the governments light lamb disposal scheme.
Farmers will be unable to book lambs into abattoirs under the scheme after that date, said David Mitchell of NFU Scotlands livestock committee.
“The deadline for booking lambs into abattoirs under the scheme is fast approaching and farmers cant afford to leave it too late,” he said.
The government-funded scheme aimed to soak up some of the surplus of light lambs on the market caused by the foot-and-mouth export ban.
The scheme paid farmers a flat rate of 10 per head.
