Livingstone plans hunt ban Bill

TWO Labour MPs have said they are prepared to introduce Bills in this session of parliament to ban hunting.

Ken Livingstone, the controversial left-winger fighting to become London mayor, said he would go ahead with a Bill even if Tom Pendry, his Labour colleague, introduces another Bill this session.

Both MPs have come high in the ballot of Private Members Bills, increasing the chance of a place in the legislative timetable.

Mr Pendry is seeking a guarantee that he will receive ministerial support before he finally goes ahead with his Bill, and that members of the current hunting inquiry members will be pressed for a speedy report.

Jack Straw last month announced that a Private Members Bill to ban hunting with dogs would be given government time and drafting assistance.

But the home secretary said there would be first be an inquiry into the practical issues involved in hunting with hounds, how a ban could be implemented and what the consequences would be.
