Malton cuts pay period

MALTON bacon factory has cut payment time for pigs by half to just five working days this week in a bid to ease producers cashflow.

But its current contract price (70p/kg) continues to lag behind the adjusted euro-spec average which is about 76.3p/kg (down from a high of 86.3p/kg in mid-July). "It is just one factor in setting prices," said a spokesman.

Malton has joined pig industry moves to get government compensation for producers faced with what has been dubbed the "BSE tax". Including a ban on meat and bonemeal in feed, it adds £5 to the cost of each pig. &#42
