MLC pumps £3m into support
for pork and bacon

THE Meat and Livestock Commission (MLC) is to launch a £3 million campaign for British pork and bacon as protests against imports grow.

The MLC campaign aims to get more people to pick pork and pork products from shop shelves and to ensure that pigmeat features more prominently on the menus of cafés, pubs and restaurants.

It will make the point that British livestock is reared according to high standards of animal welfare.

Demonstrations against pig imports began earlier this week with a picket at Immingham docks, near Grimsby in Lincolnshire.

But Danish producers are hitting back. They have disputed claims that animal welfare and meat safety standards are higher in Britain than in other European Union states.
