More muscle with new Suffolk sires
SUFFOLK breeders aim to continue improving muscle depth and growth with two new reference sires for the breeds scheme.
The ram lamb, Robinsons Supersire 02, purchased by the Suffolk Sire Reference Scheme from Tim Robinsons Lincs-based flock boasts the highest recorded muscle depth for 2002.
MLC sheep specialist, Maurice Jones says he has exceptional muscle depth with an estimated breed value of +6.18mm, nearly double the top 10%. His lean meat EBV is also above average at +4.34mm. CT scanning shows 25.27kg of carcass muscle weight, against an average of 23.06kg on 59 ram lambs.
The second ram lamb is from Charles Hardings Warwicks-based Bentley flock. Fordafourie Sneak Preview, who himself won the National sale MLC performance class in 2000 has grown well, he has a lean growth index score of 326. "The Bentley lamb is an outstanding lamb for growth, weighing in at 82kg at 138 days," says Mr Jones. *
