Mushrooming development in Stirling

STIRLING Councils community and economic development committee is supporting a £3.2 million expansion of a mushroom farm at Callander, which aims to make it the mushroom capital of Scotland.

The second phase of the pilot project at Ballochallan farm comprises a high-tech compost-making facility.

The first phase of the project, called Stirling Mushrooms, was funded by a public-private partnership involving the council, Forth Valley Enterprise, the Rural Stirling Partnership and the European Union.

It already produces six tonnes of mushrooms a week from10 mushroom tunnels. Stirling Council plans initially to construct a further 60 tunnels, producing an additional 300 tonnes of mushrooms per week.
