New vision needed
THE Council for the Protection of Rural Englands director, Kate Parminter, has called on government to develop a new vision for the countryside and make social and environmental considerations the central issue in the planning system.
Speaking at the Local Government Association rural conference, she said a new vision was needed because the countryside was changing and policy needed to reflect that.
Ms Parminter recommended that government produce a white paper as a framework for a sustainable future for Englands rural areas and that a powerful cabinet committee should be created to establish cross-departmental budgets between the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions and MAFF. *
