NFU deputy president Tim Bennett has publicly backed Farmers For Actions letter to the dairies demanding an increase of 3p/litre on milk prices to farmers, to be backdated to July 1.

Mr Bennett was one of the three speakers at a meeting in Carmarthen who were asked whether they supported the letter. All three said yes. After the meeting Mr Bennett made clear to the questioner, Gerald Vennall, an FFA campaigner from Somerset, that although he backed the demand for an increase in milk price he could not support anything illegal.

Mr Vennall told farmers weekly: "We are not supporting anything illegal ourselves. We are allowed to picket and we always seek and take police advice."
