NOW IS TIME FOR RECOVERY
When this years Cereals Event was cancelled, few questioned the need to take every precaution possible to halt the onslaught of foot-and-mouth.
But the demise of Europes premier arable event meant arable farmers lost a key opportunity to focus on the very products, services and advice they need to recover from the triple whammy of the F&M crisis, the lowest crop prices for 40 years and the wettest winter since records began.
Fortunately all is not lost. In this supplement we provide a summary of the key messages that would have been on offer at Cereals 2001.
To set the scene we have worked with national land agent Strutt & Parker to produce a special six-page Arable Advice action pack. It aims to provide the valuable mix of advice on management issues and cropping plans that has always been such an important feature of the Cereals event.
Crop husbandry issues are not ignored either. Both the HGCA and Velcourt had demonstration plots that would have given valuable messages on the latest agronomy thinking. But worry not – the flavour of those plots is captured in this supplement.
We have also compiled a review of the key product launches that would have been on show.
Recovering from the F&M crisis, low crop prices and atrocious winter weather will not be easy. We hope this supplement helps.
Perhaps we will then be able to put the deep depression of 2001 behind us and look to a brighter future when the industry meets at Cereals 2002, on the farm of FARMERS WEEKLY Farmer Focus writer Mark Ireland at North Rauceby, near Sleaford, Lincs. We look forward to seeing you there.
