NZ lamb threatens UK farmers
A REVIVAL of New Zealands lamb industry is on the cards, prompting fears of a surge of imports on to the UK market.
The mild spring weather in New Zealand is the major reason for the revival. It is expected to produce an exceptionally large lamb crop.
New Zealands currency has also weakened relative to Sterling, making its exports more competitive.
But the news runs counter to recent information produced by the UK Meat and Livestock Commission. Its Sheep Market Outlook forecast a 5% reduction in imports this year, with imports falling a further 1% next year.
The forecast was made on the basis of an anticipated downturn in New Zealand imports.
