Optic is Scots top of the pops
SPRING malting barley variety Optic has ousted Chariot as the most popular barley in Scotland this spring.
Seed sales figures from malting merchant McCreath, Simpson and Prentice put Optic at 30% of the total barley area, compared with 15% for Chariot and only 3% for Prisma.
"It is now regarded as the number one variety in Scotland," the firms Mike Dagg told an HGCA malting barley seminar in Peterborough last week. Winter variety Regina has rallied to take 18% of the area, thanks to an open autumn, he added.
