Optic variable
ANNA STILES of Wessex Grain estimates that 20% of spring barley has been combined in the southwest. Optic is the main crop and is variable.
“The good stuff is very good, with 1.7% nitrogen and up to 92% retention.” However, quality is variable with some nitrogen over 2%.
“Farmers have been very happy with it generally, especially the retention, which is where they normally fall down on.
She is slightly concerned at the moisture with much of the crop coming in at 19%, which means careful drying. Weather has been very localised in the region. Yields are varied but averaging about 6.2t/ha (2.5t/acre).
