Pesticide residues worry shoppers
ALMOST nine in 10 shoppers want supermarkets to ensure food contains no pesticide residues, according to a new survey.
In a poll by environmental campaigners for Real Food Week, 87% of women and 82% of men called for this guarantee from stores.
Last year, the government found hormone-disrupting fungicide carbendazim in apples, pears and mushrooms, and US-banned chlorpyrosis in apples.
Chemical residues in British produce have been low and within legal limits, but anti-pesticide campaigners fear they build up in body fat.
The British Retail Consortium said shops follow regulations to the letter and would never sell food that would harm consumers.
