Pig mens in plea to Scots MPs
ABOUT 30 Scottish pig producers went before the Scottish Executives rural affairs committee to plead a special case for help yesterday (Thursday).
The farmers, representing 60% of the national herd, said many were close to going out of business. They asked for immediate cash aid.
Andrew Peddie, chairman of the Scottish National Farmers Union intensive livestock committee, complained about the extra costs of high welfare standards.
In a separate move, the government agency Grampian Enterprise called for a complete review of the beleaguered pig industry in the north-east of Scotland.
