Poor yield on spring barley

MIKE SALMON, who farms at St Eval near Wadebridge in Cornwall, has started combining feed spring barley.

“Dandy is yielding about 5.6t/ha (2.25t/acre). This is half a tonne down on what we usually get and there is half the amount of straw.” He says growing conditions have contributed to the poor yield.

The weather has been poor in the last two weeks. Today he has resumed combining at 18.2%.

“Wheat is a week off yet. The flagleaf is still green, but it was drilled in February.”
