Portugal’s tale of woes
PORTUGUESE agriculture is one of the least productive in Europe due to poor geology, unfortunate climate and a failure to get adequate European Union funding.
This is according to a report in the Financial Times.
Added to these woes, it has also suffered the additional blow of an EU ban on beef and cattle exports imposed because of the concern over the spread of BSE.
Portugal is hoping that a huge dam-building programme will enable it to raise production of fruit, vegetables and flowers as well as “industrial” crops, mainly tomato and sugar beet.
