Purchasers keen on South Devon cattle
A LIVELY trade lifted the spirits of South Devon breeders when the breed societys summer sale in Gloucester saw prices twice reach 1000gns leaving only one lot, out of 62, unsold.
The annual consignment of cattle from Jeffrey Warhursts Ewefield herd at Banbury achieved the joint top price with the five-year-old cow Ewefield Simone 2nd, a daughter of Waddeton Trump 4th.
She was in-calf to Sexton Hermes 3rd and was bought by David Mayhew for his Froyle Mill herd at Alton, Hants. Another purchase for Mr Mayhew was the 1993-bred cow Woodgreen Spring Dawn, offered by Peter Spratt, Stourport. She was suckling a heifer calf and shared top billing at 1000gns.
Averages: 11 pedigree cows with calves £753; 25 non-pedigree cows with calves £439; four pedigree cows in-calf £458; two non-pedigree cows in-calf £294; six pedigree served heifers £504 and 11 maiden heifers £333. (Bruton Knowles) *
