Rain checks progress
“ITS becoming frustrating, its a stop-start affair,” said Owen Cligg of Wessex Grain.
About 85% of the oilseed rape and winter barley is completed. Yields in oilseed rape are still appearing below average.
He estimates up to 5% of winter wheat and spring barley has been combined. The early wheat varieties are Soissons and Claire, but have only been combined in isolated parcels.
“One farmer had an Optic spring barley yield between 4.9-6.8t/ha (2-2.75t/acre), which is quite encouraging,” he said. This was on chalk soil near Blanford in Dorset.
