Red tractor logo attracts support

MEMBERS of the Farm Animal Welfare Council have given their backing to the Little Red Tractor logo despite claims by critics that it offers consumers few guarantees on how animals have been treated.

At FAWCs annual open meeting in London on June 27, John Don, a council member and livestock and arable farmer from Aberdeenshire, said the red tractor scheme set minimum welfare standards.

"It is a start and if we really believe in better welfare for animals we need to support schemes like that rather than gripe at them," he said.

Council chairwoman Judy MacArthur Clark said the red tractor was not delivering to people seeking good sound and reliable evidence of welfare systems.

But she said FAWC was supportive of the scheme in the way it was proposed to be developed in the Curry report.

The Curry report suggested welfare standards should be reviewed. &#42
