Redrock herd pick of Limousin offering

THERE were plenty of Limousin breeders prepared to pay around 2000gns for females when faced with a wide selection of stock from four herds at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, last weekend.

Cattle from the Ringway, Dirnanean and Richmonds herds were on offer but it was the major reduction from the Penrith-based Redrock herd that had the edge.

Redrock bulls have long been firm favourites with Carlisle buyers and this time it was Redrock Paris, a son of the French sire Japelou, that shared the days top price of 3000gns. Bred out of a Haltcliffe Eros dam, he heads for Scotland with Mrs B Haslam, Lockerbie.

The chance to tap into Redrock seedstock saw another 3000gns for the 1995-bred Redrock Leanne, a show winning Cloughhead Charlie daughter suckling a June heifer calf by Japelou. Buyer was J Taggart, Isle of Man.

Well known pedigree stockbreeder Finlay McGowan from Blairgowrie decided to disperse the eight Limousin females in his Dirnanean herd which produced a best of 2600gns for the 10-year-old Wintles Felicity.

By Valial Bonaparte and out of a Juddmonte Valour dam, she had a bull calf at foot by Hartside Hensingham – a Broadmeadows Tombola son thats in the breeds top 1% on beef value, muscle score and muscle depth. Buyers were Gaich Farms, Grantown-on-Spey.

The last two years heifer crop from Lockerbie-based breeder Peter Henshalls Ringway herd sold to 2300gns when R Chadwick, Isle of Man bought Ringway Organdie, a Manitou-sired maiden heifer tracing back to Vainqueur.

A 1995-bred cow by Shire Derby sold at 1300gns to D and S MacPherson, Berwick-on-Tweed at the dispersal of the Richmonds herd for South Yorks breeder R Richmond (Harrison and Hetherington). &#42
