BEEF producers with autumn calving herds must apply now to register their unit for calf rearing to avoid triggering a 20-day standstill when bringing in foster calves.
Units must be inspected before foster calves can brought in without being isolated for 20 days, says National Beef Association chief executive Robert Forster. "Placing applications now will allow sufficient time for paperwork to be processed before caving starts."
This concession allows calves less than 30 days of age to be fostered directly onto a suckler cow without triggering a movement standstill. However, calves must move directly from one holding to a registered specialist calf-rearing unit, says Mr Forster.
Those wishing to take advantage of this exemption should contact their Divisional Vet Manager. Units will be checked to confirm that incoming calves can be isolated and that calves would not be moved on until after weaning, he adds. *
