Road calming jam-up

A SURREY family has pledged to fight Surrey county councils decision to introduce traffic calming measures which, they claim, make everyday farming almost impossible.

Allison and Chris Lory of Charlwood Place, Charlwood, Surrey, say the road through the village is now almost impassable for farm machinery and fear they will be forced to sell up if the council presses on with the second phase of its scheme.

The couple feel betrayed that, despite protests, the council has ignored the fact that they need to drive through the village of Charlwood to reach a block of land on the other side.

"We are fighting for our survival. We cant farm if we cant get to our land," said Mrs Lory.

"We are not against traffic calming measures, but they cannot be at the expense of our livelihood," she said.

The Lorys have been backed by the NFU, which fears similar schemes could be adopted by councils elsewhere. &#42
