Roast beef and Yorkshire still rule

FARMERS leaders have welcomed a survey that shows roast beef and Yorkshire pudding is still the number one choice on the family dinner table.

In a poll conducted by Somerfield supermarket chain at the height of the foot-and-mouth crisis, consumers were asked to name their favourite dish.

The Great British roast took first place, with steak and kidney pie, shepherds pie, roast lamb and bangers and mash also making the top 10 favourites.

Fish and chips took second place, while close behind came curry, with chicken tikka massala the most popular variety.

National Farmers Union Cymru president Hugh Richards said the survey would reassure farmers worried that foot-and-mouth might put shoppers off meat.

“These results show that thankfully this isnt the case,” he said.

“Consumers now realise that food produced by British farmers is the highest quality in the world.

“Its a big thumbs up for Welsh farmers, who are big beef and lamb producers, and one in the eye for our critics who seem determined to drive our industry abroad,” he added.
