RSPCA slams ‘zombie’ GM plans

By FWi staff

GENETICALLY modifying farm animals to make them easier to manage is unethical, says an animal welfare group.

Work is under way to produce docile “zombie” pigs, aggression-free chickens and quails, with other projects on the way, reports the Daily Mail.

But the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says causes of aggression should be addressed instead.

Research should go into improving living conditions rather than rather than using genetic modification to get rid of aggression, claims the RSPCA.

However, Professor William Muir, who is leading research at Purdue University, Indiana, said he would have no problem eating pork from a zombie pig.
