Sale ends speculation
AFTER months of speculation Uniq has offloaded its ailing pig processing company Malton Foods to Grampian Country Foods Group for £33.5m.
With a total of 12 abattoirs and processing plants Grampian will now be the largest pig buyer, with a weekly kill of 56,000 pigs, a quarter of the UK total.
For now, it will be "business as usual" at Maltons nine sites, said Grampians corporate marketing manager Alasdair Cox.
The companys thrust into pig processing was given a cautious welcome by the industry. Ian Campbell, regional director of the National Pig Association, said: "The indecision is at last over – not knowing the future of Malton was bad for the industry." *
